William Frederick Witherington (1785-1865) was an English painter and draughtsman who specialized in portraits, landscapes, and genre scenes. He was born in London and studied under the renowned artist John Raphael Smith. Witherington exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1806 to 1851, becoming an Associate of the Royal Academy in 1827. He also exhibited at the British Institution from 1807 to 1834 and at Suffolk Street Gallery from 1830 to 1840. His works are characterized by a delicate use of light and shade, as well as a strong sense of composition. His subjects include historical scenes, literary figures such as Shakespeare's characters, landscapes with ruins or cottages, portraits of children or animals, and genre scenes depicting everyday life.
