Spencer Perceval Canvas Print Collection

Spencer Perceval (1762-1812) was a British politician who served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1809 to 1812. He was born in London, England and educated at Harrow School and Trinity College, Cambridge. Perceval entered politics in 1796 when he was elected to represent Northampton in the House of Commons. He quickly rose through the ranks and became Chancellor of the Exchequer under William Pitt the Younger in 1807. In 1809, he succeeded Pitt as Prime Minister and held that office until his assassination by John Bellingham on 11 May 1812. During his tenure, Perceval worked to reduce government spending while also increasing taxes on imports to protect British industry from foreign competition. His policies were unpopular with many people but they helped Britain survive during a period of economic hardship caused by war with France and other European countries.
