EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the Monument to Leon Gambetta, located in the cour Napoleon of the Louvre in Paris. Created in 1888 by Jean Paul Aube, this stunning piece is made of bronze and stone, showcasing intricate details and architectural brilliance. The monument pays homage to Leon Gambetta (1838-82), a prominent French Republican statesman known for his advocacy of universal suffrage and human rights. Designed by Louis Charles Boileau, it was inaugurated on July 14th. However, during the Vichy Government regime, the bronze was melted down. It wasn't until 1954 that the monument was removed entirely. In 1982, a replica of Gambetta's group was rebuilt in Square Edouard Vaillant within Paris' 20th arrondissement. The allegorical figures depicted on the statue represent truth and equality - essential values symbolizing human rights. This photograph not only showcases the beauty of this historical artwork but also provides a glimpse into daily life at that time. Passers-by can be seen admiring the monument while others go about their day under an elegant street lamp. The obelisk-like structure adds grandeur to its surroundings. Preserved through Adolphe Giraudon's lens from late 19th century France, this image offers us a timeless view into history – capturing both artistry and societal scenes simultaneously.
