The Pedigree of El-Moizz (litho)
8661080 The Pedigree of El-Moizz (litho) by Dudley, Robert Ambrose (1867-1951); Private Collection; (add.info.: The Pedigree of El-Moizz. El-Moizz found his opportunity in the anarchy that followed the death of Kafur, the fourth Fatemid Caliph. He sent his Kaid, Gauhar, into Egypt with a hundred thousand men. The Turks were defeated, and Gauhar laid the foundations of a new city, El-Kahira (Cairo). When later El-Moizz followed, in 973, and founded the university of El-Azhar, the leading Shias and Sherifs came and asked by what claim of descent he had assumed his position. "Here is my pedigree!" said he, as he unsheathed his sword, "and here is my proof, " as he flung gold to the people. Illustration for Hutchinson's History of the Nations (Hutchinson, c.1920). EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking lithograph print depicts "The Pedigree of El-Moizz," showcasing the rise to power of the fourth Fatemid Caliph. In a time of anarchy and chaos following Kafur's death, El-Moizz seized his opportunity by sending his trusted Kaid, Gauhar, into Egypt with a formidable army. The Turks were swiftly defeated, and Gauhar laid the foundations for what would become the illustrious city of Cairo.
Upon El-Moizz's arrival in 973, he solidified his authority by founding the renowned university of El-Azhar. When questioned about his claim to leadership by prominent figures in Shia and Sherif communities, he boldly unsheathed his sword as a symbol of his lineage and threw gold to the people as proof of his worthiness.
This powerful image captures not only a pivotal moment in history but also reflects themes of conquest, legitimacy, and wealth. The intricate details in this artwork bring to life the grandeur and drama surrounding El-Moizz's ascent to power. As we gaze upon this piece, we are transported back in time to witness firsthand the audacious actions that shaped empires and defined legacies.
