EDITORS COMMENTS
The captivating print captures Cornelia Bradley Martin, dressed as the iconic Mary Stuart, Queen of Scots, during the extravagant Bradley-Martin Ball held in 1897. Organized by Cornelia herself, this lavish costume ball aimed to become the most remarkable event in New York City's history. With a grand vision to stimulate the city's economy after years of economic downturn and financial crises, Cornelia spared no expense. In this photograph taken by an American photographer from Bridgeman Images and now part of the collection at the New-York Historical Society, we see Cornelia exuding regal elegance as she embodies Mary Stuart. The attention to detail in her elaborate costume is evident – every fold and lace meticulously crafted to recreate historical authenticity. The Bradley-Martins' commitment to creating a spectacle was unparalleled. They spent a staggering amount equivalent to $1.7 million today on organizing this opulent affair at the Waldorf Hotel. However, their intentions were met with mixed reactions from society; while some admired their ambition and saw it as an opportunity for economic revitalization, others criticized them for indulging in such extravagance during challenging times. Ultimately, despite generating negative publicity due to its excessive nature, the Bradley-Martin Ball proved to be a social triumph that left lasting impressions on all who attended or heard about it. This mesmerizing image serves as a testament not only to Cornelia's impeccable taste but also highlights how one woman's determination could create ripples throughout society and spark debates about wealth distribution and propriety that still resonate today.
