Fan; on one side Narihira and the pilgrim; on the other, chrysanthemums and a brook

5981350 Fan; on one side Narihira and the pilgrim; on the other, chrysanthemums and a brook, Edo period, late 17th- early 18th century (ink, colour & gold on paper) by Korin, Ogata (1658-1716); 35.6x22.7 cm; Freer Gallery of Art, Smithsonian Institution, USA; (add.info.: On one side of this circular fan is a painting illustrating a passage from the Tales of Ise, a work of narratives and poems probably composed in the tenth century by an unknown author. In this passage, travelers encounter a dark pass through the mountains. They sense the desolate remoteness from their familiar world in Kyoto and express this feeling in a poem:
Beside Mount Utsu
In Suruga
I can see you
Neither waking
nor, alas, even in my dreams.
On the other side of the fan is a painting of white chrysanthemums beside a stream. The flowers are painted in low relief, a technique known as moriage.); eFreer Slacker Gallery; Freer Gallery of Art, Smithsonian Institution; Japanese, out of copyright

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a delicate and intricate fan from the late 17th to early 18th century Edo period in Japan. Created by the renowned artist Ogata Korin, this circular fan is a true masterpiece of ink, color, and gold on paper. The fan features two distinct sides that transport us into different realms. On one side, we are immersed in a scene inspired by the Tales of Ise, an ancient collection of narratives and poems. The painting depicts Narihira and the pilgrim encountering a dark pass through the mountains. Their sense of isolation from their familiar world in Kyoto is beautifully expressed through a poignant poem inscribed on the artwork. On the flip side of this exquisite fan lies another enchanting painting. Here, white chrysanthemums gracefully bloom beside a tranquil stream. What makes this depiction even more remarkable is that these flowers are painted using moriage technique, creating an illusionary effect with low relief. As we admire this stunning piece at Freer Gallery of Art in Smithsonian Institution's USA branch, it becomes evident why Korin was celebrated as one of Japan's greatest artists during his time. His attention to detail and mastery over various artistic techniques truly shine through in every brushstroke. Through this print captured by Bridgeman Images for Fine Art Finder, we can appreciate both sides of this extraordinary fan - each telling its own story while showcasing Korin's exceptional talent as an artist.
