EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait print showcases King Charles II of England, painted in 1653 by Philippe de Champaigne. The oil on canvas artwork measures 182x141 cm when framed and is currently housed at the Cleveland Museum of Art in Ohio, USA. During his exile in France, Charles II commissioned this portrait as a symbol of his determination to reclaim the throne he had been forced to flee during the English civil war. Although he never fought on the battlefield himself, Charles II was known for being the last British monarch to don a full suit of armor, which served as a representation of his rank and status. In this painting, we see King Charles II gesturing towards the sea beyond Dover cliffs while an awaiting fleet hints at his intention to return triumphantly to England. And indeed, in 1660 he did just that. The image captures not only the regal presence and power exuded by King Charles II but also reflects upon significant historical events and symbols associated with him. From his royal stature and three-quarter length pose to references such as ships and swords representing battles at sea or land - all contribute to creating a rich narrative within this seventeenth-century masterpiece. This print from Fine Art Finder allows us to appreciate both the artistic skill employed by Philippe de Champaigne and delve into an important chapter of British history through visual storytelling.
