EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a collection of spokeshaves, dating back to the 18th and 19th centuries. Crafted from boxwood and metal, these exquisite tools were essential for carpenters and woodworkers during the Georgian and Victorian eras. The blades on display exhibit a remarkable variety, highlighting the ingenuity and skill of their creators. The topmost spokeshave in this image is attributed to David Flather & Sons, Solly Works in Sheffield, crafted in 1849 or later. Measuring at 28.9cm, it bears witness to the high-quality craftsmanship synonymous with English woodworking traditions. Next in line is another masterpiece by David Flather & Sons from Sheffield, measuring at 29.8cm. This particular piece carries the dealer's mark of George Musgrave from Lincoln between c. 1851-1900. A smaller yet equally impressive spokeshave comes next; also made by David Flather & Sons at Solly Works in Sheffield after 1849, it measures approximately 26.7cm. Lastly, we have a spokeshave created by John Jacob Holtzapffel of London between c. 1794-1804 that measures around 22.7cm—a testament to his expertise as a renowned toolmaker during that era. This print not only captures an array of historic woodworking implements but also pays homage to British craftsmanship and traditional woodworking techniques that have stood the test of time.
