EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases "The Adoration of the Golden Calf" a remarkable painting by Frans Francken II. Created in the late 1620s, this artwork depicts a significant biblical event from the Old Testament. According to scripture, while Moses was receiving the Ten Commandments from God on Mount Sinai, his people grew impatient and created an idol in the form of a golden calf under Aaron's guidance. In this scene, we witness a vivid portrayal of celebration and worship as individuals gather around the magnificent golden calf. The artist skillfully captures their joyous expressions, elaborate costumes, and lively dance movements. The atmosphere is filled with merriment as people indulge in food and drink while reveling in their newfound idolatry. However, upon Moses' return to discover his people's betrayal, he reacts with righteous anger. In an act of defiance against this false deity and its worshippers, he shatters the stone tablets inscribed with God's commandments and destroys the golden calf. Frans Francken II masterfully brings this dramatic moment to life through vibrant colors and intricate details that highlight both religious devotion and human frailty. This exquisite piece can be found among the esteemed collection at Moscow's State A Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts—an invaluable treasure that continues to captivate viewers centuries later.
