Cardinal Beaufort, 1860 - A Glimpse into the Tragic Fate of Joan of Arc

EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print captures a pivotal moment in history, depicting Cardinal Beaufort interrogating the courageous Joan of Arc. Created by J White in 1860, this engraving is based on Paul Delaroche's iconic painting "Joan of Arc before Cardinal Beaufort". The scene unfolds within the confines of Rouen Prison during the tumultuous Hundred Years' War. In this haunting portrayal, we witness Joan, chained and clad in her armor, facing relentless questioning from Henry Beaufort. As a French patriot and martyr who fervently believed she was guided by divine voices to liberate her country from English rule, Joan faced accusations of heresy and sorcery that ultimately led to her tragic demise. The image evokes a sense of profound injustice as we contemplate the clash between religious superstition and an unwavering spirit fighting for freedom. It serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by those who challenge societal norms and dare to defy oppressive forces. Through this masterful engraving, J White transports us back to the fifteenth century with remarkable detail and emotion. We are compelled to reflect on themes such as faith, power dynamics, gender roles, and national identity that continue to resonate even in our modern world. As we gaze upon this historical artifact preserved by The Print Collector archives, let us honor Joan's memory as an emblematic figure whose indomitable spirit continues to inspire generations.
