Cope, 1500s. Creator: Unknown
Cope, 1500s. Silk fabric woven in China with European motifs was transported by European traders by the early 16th century. This popular pattern features a crowned double-headed eagle grasping arrows in its claws above a vase emitting blossoming vines. The eagle motif was derived from the Hapsburg coat of arms, rulers of Spain and Austria during the 1500s and 1600s. Vertical borders with Chinese flora occur near the selvages of the five silk lengths forming the cope. The gilt-metal braided and fringed hood and broad orphrey band, or ornamental border, along the front edges feature fashionable small-scale floral sprigs

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a stunning cope from the 1500s, created by an unknown artist. The silk fabric used in this masterpiece was woven in China and adorned with enchanting European motifs. Traders from Europe transported this popular pattern as early as the 16th century. The focal point of the design is a crowned double-headed eagle clutching arrows in its powerful claws, positioned above a vase emitting blossoming vines. This majestic eagle motif draws inspiration from the Hapsburg coat of arms, which belonged to the rulers of Spain and Austria during the 1500s and 1600s. The cope consists of five lengths of silk, each featuring vertical borders embellished with delicate Chinese flora near their selvages. Adding to its opulence, the hood and broad orphrey band are intricately braided and fringed with gilt-metal accents. These elements also showcase fashionable small-scale floral sprigs that were highly sought after during that era. Preserved at The Cleveland Museum of Art, this extraordinary garment represents not only China's rich heritage but also serves as a testament to cultural exchange between East and West during ancient times. With its exquisite craftsmanship and fusion of artistic traditions, this cope remains an enduring symbol of beauty transcending geographical boundaries.
