George Washingtons House at Mount Vernon, Virginia, USA, c1820-1839

George Washingtons House at Mount Vernon, Virginia, USA, c1820-1839. This plantation on the banks of the Potomac River was inherited by George Washington from his sister-in-law in 1759. Washington had the house rebuilt as it appears today and operated the estate as five separate farms. After the War of Independence he returned to Mount Vernon and resided there for a considerable amount of time during his two terms as President. After Washingtons death the fortunes of the estate declined until, in 1860 it was acquired by the Mount Vernon Ladies Association of the Union, who restored it. Today Mount Vernon is a popular tourist attraction. Plate 39 from Le Costume Ancien et Moderne, by Jules Ferrario

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases George Washington's House at Mount Vernon, Virginia, USA, dating back to the early 19th century. Nestled on the picturesque banks of the Potomac River, this historic plantation was bequeathed to George Washington by his sister-in-law in 1759. The esteemed General had the house meticulously reconstructed to its present-day splendor and managed the estate as five distinct farms. Following his service in the War of Independence, Washington returned to Mount Vernon and spent a substantial amount of time here during his two presidential terms. However, after his passing, the estate faced a period of decline until it was eventually acquired by the Mount Vernon Ladies Association of the Union in 1860. With their unwavering dedication and passion for preservation, they lovingly restored this national treasure. Today, Mount Vernon stands as an iconic tourist attraction that draws visitors from near and far. This enchanting engraving captures not only the grandeur of George Washington's residence but also highlights its surrounding natural beauty with lush gardens and majestic trees adorning its grounds. The image is part of Le Costume Ancien et Moderne collection by Jules Ferrario and Paolo Fumagalli. It offers a glimpse into America's rich agricultural heritage while paying homage to one of its most revered figures - President George Washington himself.
