Hubble Space Telescope in orbit, 1980s
Hubble Space Telescope in orbit, 1980s. Artists impression of the Hubble Telescope in orbit over the earth. The Hubble Space Telescope (HST), was designed to see seven times further into space than had been possible before, without the distortion caused by the earths atmosphere. HST is a reflecting telescope and its main mirror has a diameter of 2 1/2 meters. Work began in 1977 and HST was finally launched by Space Shuttle Discovery on 24 April 1990. Problems with its giant mirror meant that it did not initially work as well as expected. Corrective optics were installed in 1993, greatly improving the telescopes performance, enabling it to view the Universe in unprecedented detail

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Hubble Space Telescope in orbit during the 1980s. An artist's impression beautifully depicts this groundbreaking telescope hovering over Earth, highlighting its significant contribution to space exploration and scientific advancement. Designed with the ability to see seven times further into space than ever before, the Hubble Space Telescope revolutionized our understanding of the universe by eliminating distortion caused by Earth's atmosphere. With a main mirror diameter of 2 1/2 meters, this reflecting telescope was a marvel of innovation and technology. Despite initial setbacks due to problems with its giant mirror upon launch in April 1990, corrective optics were installed in 1993, greatly enhancing its performance and enabling it to capture unprecedented detail of celestial phenomena. The image evokes a sense of wonder and curiosity as we contemplate humanity's quest for knowledge beyond our planet. It symbolizes mankind's relentless pursuit of understanding natural phenomena through scientific experimentation. The vibrant colors add depth and intrigue to this visual representation of one of NASA's most iconic achievements. As we gaze at this remarkable photograph from Heritage Images' Oxford Science Archive collection, we are reminded not only of the incredible capabilities and accomplishments associated with the Hubble Space Telescope but also how it has forever changed our perception of space exploration in the late twentieth century.
