Lieutenant Georges Guynemer and Captain Felix Brocard, French fighter pilots, 5 February 1916

Lieutenant Georges Guynemer and Captain Felix Brocard, French fighter pilots, 5 February 1916. Photograph taken on the day of Guynemers (left) 5th victory. Guynemer (1894-1917) became the first French ace to attain 50 victories, a mark he reached at the end of July 1917. As his tally grew, Guynemer was lionized by the French press and became a national hero, with his exploits going some way to taking the publics mind off the appalling losses being sustained in the trenches at the time. On 11 September 1917, with a total of 53 kills to his credit, Guynemer was apparently shot down after attacking a German observation plane. Neither his aeroplane nor his body were ever found. Captain Brocard commanded Guynemers squadron, Groupe de Chasse No 12, known as The Storks

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph, we are transported back to the height of World War I, where Lieutenant Georges Guynemer and Captain Felix Brocard stand side by side in their military uniforms. The image was taken on 5 February 1916, a significant day for Guynemer as he achieved his fifth victory as a fighter pilot. Guynemer, born in 1894, would go on to become the first French ace to attain an impressive tally of 50 victories by July 1917. His remarkable success made him a national hero and provided some respite from the devastating losses experienced in the trenches at that time. As commander of Guynemer's squadron, Groupe de Chasse No 12 (known as The Storks), Captain Brocard played a crucial role in their triumphs. The photograph captures both men posing confidently with their fur coats draped over their shoulders. Their determined expressions reveal the courage and determination required to navigate aerial warfare during this tumultuous period. Tragically, Guynemer's fate took a turn on 11 September 1917 when he seemingly disappeared after engaging with a German observation plane. Despite extensive searches, neither his aircraft nor his body were ever found. This powerful image serves as a testament to these brave individuals who risked everything amidst the chaos of war. It reminds us of their unwavering dedication and sacrifice for their country during one of history's most challenging times - World War I.
