The Madonna of Humility with the Temptation of Eve, c. 1400. Creator: Olivuccio di Ciccarello
The Madonna of Humility with the Temptation of Eve, c. 1400. The Madonna is seated humbly on the ground nursing her child. Saint George and the Archangels Gabriel and Michael kneel nearby, while Christs disciples appear radiating from the Madonnas halo in the form of stars. In contrast with the Virgins purity, Eve lies in the lower part of the painting. Coaxed by the serpent, she raises the forbidden fruit to her mouth, thus condemning humankind through her original sin. The juxtaposition of these two images affirms the Incarnation and the role of Christ and the Virgin in the redemption story. The deep scratches on the surface of the panel, especially on the serpents face and Eves wrist, likely resulted from a zealous Christians symbolic attack on the power of evil. The artist, Olivuccio di Ciccarello, is known to have been active in the Marche in central Italy. Little is known of his life except that he was an important and prolific painter in Ancona, where he died. His paintings were formerly attributed to Carlo da Camerino, an apparently nonexistent artist, on the basis of a mistaken reading of his signature on a crucifix

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases "The Madonna of Humility with the Temptation of Eve" painted by Olivuccio di Ciccarello around 1400. The central focus is on the humble Madonna, seated gracefully on the ground as she tenderly nurses her child. Surrounding her are Saint George and the Archangels Gabriel and Michael, kneeling in reverence. The disciples of Christ emanate from the Madonnas halo like radiant stars. In stark contrast to the Virgins purity, Eve lies below in a scene depicting her temptation by the serpent. With forbidden fruit raised to her mouth, she unknowingly condemns humanity through original sin. This juxtaposition emphasizes the significance of Christ and Virgin Mary's roles in redemption. Notably, deep scratches mar parts of this panel painting, particularly on the serpents face and Eves wrist. These marks likely resulted from a zealous Christian's symbolic attack against evil forces. Olivuccio di Ciccarello was an esteemed painter active in central Italy's Marche region during his lifetime; however, little is known about his personal life except that he was prolific in Ancona where he eventually passed away. Previously misattributed to Carlo da Camerino due to a mistaken reading of his signature on a crucifix, Olivuccio di Ciccarello's talent shines through this remarkable artwork captured beautifully in this print by Heritage Art/Heritage Images.
