EDITORS COMMENTS
This 19th century photograph, titled "Monsieur et Madame Mosselman and their two daughters," was created by the renowned Belgian artist Alfred Dedreux in 1848. The image beautifully captures the elegance and sophistication of the Mosselman family as they enjoy a leisurely day out in Paris, France. The family, consisting of Monsieur (François Alfred Mosselman), Madame (Claire Gazzani Mosselman), and their two daughters, Eugenie Claire Mosselman (later known as Eugenie Gazzini) and Marguerite Mosselman (later known as Marguerite Mosselman du Chenoy), are depicted in the heart of the city, on the Avenue des Champs-Élysées. The family's high social standing is evident in their stylish attire and the elegant horse-drawn carriage they ride in. The father, Monsieur Mosselman, is dressed in the formal attire of a bourgeois or industrialist, while his wife and daughters are dressed in the latest fashionable clothing of the time. The daughters, with their long curls and brightly colored dresses, gaze out at the viewer with a sense of wonder and excitement. In the background, two horses are hitched to the carriage, their heads turned towards the family, as if eager to continue their journey. The canvas material of the carriage, the horses' shiny coats, and the lush greenery in the foreground all contribute to the rich and vibrant color palette of the photograph. This image is a testament to the heritage and art of the 19th century, offering a glimpse into the lives of the aristocracy and middle class during this period. The Mosselman family's joyful and carefree demeanor conveys the leisure and luxury that were once synonymous with the French bourgeoisie.
