Newhaven Pier: the fishing-boats arrived, 1862. Creator: Unknown
Newhaven Pier: the fishing-boats arrived, 1862....the fisheries are one of the chief natural resources of Scotland...At Newhaven, near Edinburgh, there is a seat of the white fishery which is noticeable as embracing all the points of the trade which are worthy of delineation...except suffering an occasional loss of nets or lines by means of a passing storm, [the fisher folk] are not subject to much fluctuation of income or expenditure. The boat, with its outfit of nets, sails, lines, etc. is worth from a hundred and fifty to two hundred and fifty pounds sterling. It is usually a family affair, being the property of a father and his three sons, or of two brothers, and so on. So that at the busy season of herring-catching and other periods it is filled by the family, with the aid, perhaps, of one or two hired lads, who are very likely cousins or other relations of the owner, and who, in all probability, will speedily have a boat of their own. The Newhaven fisher people are admirable examples of their class...'. From "Illustrated London News", 1862

EDITORS COMMENTS

The image showcases a multitude of fishing boats, each one brimming with character and the promise of a bountiful catch. The boats, adorned with colorful sails and nets, are a testament to the enduring tradition of the white fishery, one of Scotland's most valuable natural resources. The scene is described in the Illustrated London News in 1862, which extolled the virtues of the Newhaven fisher folk. These hardworking individuals were admired for their resilience and self-sufficiency, as they navigated the waters with their boats, worth between £150 and £250, which were often passed down through generations. The boats were the property of extended families, with each member contributing to the fishing operation during the busy seasons. The photograph captures the essence of this communal spirit, with the boats filling the pier, surrounded by the picturesque backdrop of the Scottish coastline. Despite the occasional setbacks from storms, the fisher folk of Newhaven were shielded from the volatile income and expenditure typical of other industries.
