Pheasant-Shooting - drawn by Duncan, 1850. Creator: Unknown
Pheasant-Shooting - drawn by Duncan, 1850. Pheasant shooting commences, according to law, on the 1st of October; but may, with very good results, be postponed for a while...It is a most mistaken idea, the popular notion that the pheasant is an easy bird to shoot. It is slow on the wing, certainly, and, when sprung in the "open, " not very difficult to hit. But in cover, where chiefly it is to be met with, such obstacles as branches and thick foliage call for extreme quickness, amounting almost to what is called "snap shooting"...Let the shooter rise with the lark...pheasants are abroad betimes; they like to breakfast early. If he purpose taking his pleasure single-handed, his best assistant will be an old pointer, trained to obey orders to the letter, and prone to beat hard by his master's heels, poking his "intellectual" nose into every tuft big enough to hold a humming-bird'. From "Illustrated London News", 1850

Pheasant-Shooting
EDITORS COMMENTS
is an exquisite 19th-century engraving by an unknown artist, depicting the traditional British pastime of pheasant shooting. The scene unfolds in a rustic, woodland setting, with a group of men in hunting attire, their guns at the ready. The sun rises over the landscape, casting long shadows and bathing the scene in a soft, golden light. According to the text from the Illustrated London News, published in 1850, pheasant shooting season officially begins on October 1st, but eager hunters may start earlier. Contrary to popular belief, the pheasant is not an easy bird to shoot, especially when it is hiding in cover. The text emphasizes the importance of quick reflexes and snap shooting to successfully hit the bird. The men in the print appear to be following this advice, with one man rising from his seat as a pheasant takes flight. An old pointer dog sits by his side, alert and focused, ready to assist in the hunt. The dog's keen sense of smell and obedience are essential in locating the birds, making them invaluable companions for the hunters. The print captures the essence of rural life in 19th-century Britain, where the pursuit of game was a popular hobby and a way of life. The woodland setting, with its dense foliage and wildlife, adds to the sense of adventure and excitement, making "Pheasant-Shooting" a timeless and captivating image.
