The Port of Cordelieres and Castle Loches, 1891. Artist: Emmanuel Lansyer
The Port of Cordelieres and Castle Loches, Touraine, France, 1891. Built on a rocky outcrop (on the site of a Gallic oppidum) the chateau towers over the town and its outer walls conceal a beautiful medieval city. The heir apparent to the throne, Charles, took refuge there and then came the historic moment when Joan of Arc begged him to go to Reims to be crowned king. Once he had become Charles VII, he went back to the chateau with his Damoyselle de Beaute, Agnes Sorel, the first official mistress of a king of France. Louis XI enlarged the fortress and made it a state prison, while Louis XII built the second wing of the Royal Residence, on the northern wing of the outer wall, which contrasts with the southern wing, which looks more feudal with its turrets, watchtowers, and its parapet

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases "The Port of Cordelieres and Castle Loches" in Touraine, France, as captured by the talented artist Emmanuel Lansyer in 1891. The castle, perched on a rocky outcrop that once housed a Gallic oppidum, stands majestically above the town. Its outer walls conceal a stunning medieval city within. This historic location witnessed significant events such as when Charles, the heir apparent to the throne sought refuge there and was later persuaded by Joan of Arc to journey to Reims for his coronation as King Charles VII. Over time, this fortress evolved under different monarchs' hands. Louis XI expanded it into a state prison while Louis XII added the second wing of the Royal Residence on its northern side. This new addition contrasted with the more feudal appearance of the southern wing adorned with turrets, watchtowers, and parapets. Emmanuel Lansyer's oil painting beautifully captures this picturesque scene from 19th-century France. The vibrant colors bring life to both the natural landscape surrounding Castle Loches and its architectural splendor. This print serves as a testament to French history during medieval times—a reminder of how castles like Loches played crucial roles in shaping political power dynamics while also serving as elegant residences for royalty throughout centuries past.
