The scene is filled with an air of anticipation as the crowd gathers around a marquee set up at the North end of Cambridge-place, near the Terminus of the Great Western Railway. The Honorable Architect, Mr. Hopper, hands over a trowel to Prince Albert who takes center stage. With great precision and grace, he spreads mortar onto a polished mahogany board presented by architect Mr. George Russell French. As the one-and-a-half-ton block of grey granite is lowered into place amidst thunderous applause, the band strikes up "God Save the Queen", which resonates through every heart present.
