The Seven Mountains and Drachenfels, from Godenberg, 1845. Creator: Ebenezer Landells
The Seven Mountains and Drachenfels, from Godenberg, 1845. The village of Godenberg [in Germany] is one of the most charming places of summer residence on the Rhine; and its Castle Keep, on the summit of the hill, commands one of the most beautiful prospects on the river. The group of hills called the Seven Mountains, in reality, are more than seven in number, and form a grand commencement to the beautiful scenery of the Rhine; they are the highest and wildest hills on its banks...the loftiest, Owelberg, is 1453 feet high. The most interesting of the whole group, from its shape and position, but more than all from the verses of Byron, is the famed Drachenfels (Dragon Rock), whose precipices rise abruptly from the river-side, crowned with a ruin.... The Seven Mountains and Drachenfels, from Godenberg, 1845
EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print by Ebenezer Landells takes us back to the picturesque village of Godenberg in Germany during the summer of 1845. The village itself is renowned for its charm as a summer residence on the banks of the majestic Rhine River. Perched atop a hill, its Castle Keep offers an unparalleled view of one of the most beautiful prospects along this iconic river. The focal point of this image is undoubtedly the group of hills known as the Seven Mountains. Contrary to their name, these hills are more than just seven in number and serve as a magnificent introduction to the stunning scenery that awaits travelers along the Rhine. Amongst them stands Owelberg, reaching an impressive height of 1453 feet. However, it is Drachenfels (Dragon Rock) that steals our attention with its unique shape and strategic position. Its towering cliffs rise dramatically from beside the river, crowned with a haunting ruin that adds an air of mystery to this already enchanting landscape. This particular hill has gained fame not only for its physical attributes but also due to Lord Byron's verses dedicated to it. Ebenezer Landells' engraving captures every detail with precision and elegance, transporting us back in time to witness this breathtaking vista firsthand. As we gaze upon this historic scene through Landells' lens, we can't help but be reminded of nature's grandeur and man's ability to capture such beauty through artistry.
