Statue of Ferdinand de Lesseps, Port Said, Egypt, c1920s-c1930s(?)

Statue of Ferdinand de Lesseps, Port Said, Egypt, c1920s-c1930s(?). A French diplomat and entrepreneur, de Lesseps (1805-1894) built the Suez Canal to enable shipping to pass between the Mediterranean and the Red Sea rather than having to sail around the Cape of Good hope, completing the project in 1869. In 1880 he then went on to make the first attempt at building a canal to link the Atlantic and Pacific oceans across the Isthmus of Panama. A combination of the difficult terrain, a horrendous mortality rate amongst the workforce from tropical diseases and spiralling costs led to the abandonment the project in 1889 however

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the majestic Statue of Ferdinand de Lesseps in Port Said, Egypt, dating back to the 1920s or 1930s. The statue pays tribute to Ferdinand de Lesseps, a renowned French diplomat and entrepreneur who played a pivotal role in shaping global trade routes. De Lesseps is best known for his remarkable achievement - the construction of the Suez Canal. Completed in 1869, this engineering marvel connected the Mediterranean Sea with the Red Sea, revolutionizing international commerce by eliminating the need for ships to navigate around Cape of Good Hope. In addition to his triumph at Suez, de Lesseps also embarked on an ambitious project: building a canal linking the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans across Panama's Isthmus. However, due to challenging terrain, rampant tropical diseases among workers, and escalating costs, this endeavor was ultimately abandoned in 1889. The photograph showcases not only de Lesseps' enduring legacy but also highlights his significant contributions as an entrepreneur and visionary leader. Standing tall against Port Said's waterfront backdrop, this commemorative statue serves as a reminder of how one man's determination transformed global transportation and shaped modern industry. Capturing both historical significance and architectural beauty within its monochrome frame, this image transports us back to an era when maritime trade flourished under de Lesseps' influence. It stands as a testament to human ingenuity while honoring one man's indelible mark on our interconnected world.
