Weston-super-Mare Regatta, from the sea - drawn by Condy, 1845. Boat races off the Somerset coast. In the centre covered in signal flags is Ganymede saluting, and on the right in full sail is Lily of Devon....the wind having somewhat gone down, the [flagship] Ganymede again arrived in the bay, and the same tide brought up the Lily of Devon, W. F. Moore, Esq. of the R.W.Y C. [Royal Western Yacht Club], she having, in spite of every difficulty, rounded the point. From " Illustrated London News", 1845, Vol VII

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photo print, titled "Weston-super-Mare Regatta, from the sea - drawn by Condy, 1845" takes us back to a time of thrilling boat races off the Somerset coast. The image showcases two prominent vessels amidst a picturesque seascape. In the center of the frame stands Ganymede, majestically covered in signal flags as if saluting its fellow competitors. On the right side of the composition sails Lily of Devon with full force, gracefully cutting through the waves. It is worth noting that despite challenging conditions and obstacles encountered along their journey, both ships have persevered. The artist Nicholas Matthews Condy skillfully captures this momentous event in his detailed engraving for "Illustrated London News" in 1845. His work transports us to an era when regattas were highly anticipated social gatherings and displays of maritime prowess. This historical snapshot not only highlights the excitement surrounding boat racing but also provides insight into Victorian society's love for water sports and leisure activities. The presence of international code signals adds an element of intrigue and emphasizes the importance placed on communication during naval events. As we gaze upon this remarkable print by Smyth from Heritage Images, we are reminded of Weston-super-Mare's rich nautical heritage and its enduring connection to seafaring traditions.
