Wolseley motor launch at anchor, 1914. Creator: Kirk & Sons of Cowes

Wolseley motor launch at anchor, 1914. The Wolseley Motors company, a British motor vehicle manufacturer founded in early 1901 by Vickers, also built marine power-units for a variety of watercraft. At first engines for launches were made in partnership with the well-known manufacturers, the Teddington Launch Works, to supply the launches. Demand for marine engines grew and Wolseley also designed and manufactured engines for hydroplanes, cruisers, passenger ferries and lifeboats. Many of the larger vessels were built by S. E. Saunders Ltd. at Cowes, Isle-of-Wight

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a Wolseley motor launch at anchor in 1914. The image, captured by Kirk & Sons of Cowes, transports us back to the early 20th century when the British motor vehicle manufacturer, Wolseley Motors, ventured into building marine power-units for various watercraft. Originally partnering with Teddington Launch Works to supply engines for launches, Wolseley soon witnessed a surge in demand for their marine engines. This led them to design and manufacture engines not only for launches but also hydroplanes, cruisers, passenger ferries, and lifeboats. Notably, S. E. Saunders Ltd. , located at Cowes on the Isle of Wight, constructed many of these larger vessels. The photograph beautifully captures the elegance and grandeur of this motor launch as it peacefully rests at anchor in an undisclosed location along The Solent. Its sleek hull gracefully cuts through the water while its powerful engine lies dormant yet ready to propel it forward on its next adventure. As we admire this monochrome snapshot frozen in time, we can't help but appreciate the craftsmanship that went into both the boat's construction and Kirk & Sons' ability to capture such a momentous scene. It serves as a reminder of how transportation has evolved over time – from road transport with cars like those produced by Wolseley Motors to innovative modes like water transport that relied on reliable marine engines. This print is not just a historical artifact; it is an invitation to explore our past and marvel at human ingenuity during an era when land met sea in perfect harmony.
