WALMER CASTLE, Kent. " Prince George of Denmark" husband of Queen Anne. Painting attributed to Michael DAHL (1656-1743). Prince George was created Duke of Cumberland after his marriage to Princess Anne in 1683. Only one child survived infancy but died of smallpox aged 11 in 1700. When Anne ascended the throne in 1702 Prince George supported her loyally, notably as Lord High Admiral. He died in 1708
