Ford Motor Company Works, Thames Foundry, Dagenham, Havering, Greater London. A view of the new foundry under construction at the Ford Motor Company Works, showing the east end of the building with reinforcing steel, framework and concrete pouring in progress.
The foundry opened in 1957 and cost £ 7.5 million to build. The building was a two-storey reinforced concrete structure, almost a quarter of a mile in length. The new facilities included kitchens and a canteen, toilet accommodation, a medical centre and a compressor house. There was also an ancillary building, 700 ft in length, roads to the site, a settling tank and ponds. It later closed in 1984

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the impressive construction of the Thames Foundry at the Ford Motor Company Works in Dagenham, Greater London. The image showcases the east end of the building, with workers diligently pouring concrete and reinforcing steel to create this monumental structure. Built in 1957 at a staggering cost of £7.5 million, this two-storey reinforced concrete foundry spanned almost a quarter mile in length. It was not just a simple factory; it boasted modern amenities such as kitchens, a canteen, toilet facilities, a medical center, and even a compressor house. Additionally, an ancillary building measuring 700 feet in length was constructed alongside roads leading to the site. The photograph provides insight into the scale of work undertaken during its construction. Cranes loom overhead while dedicated individuals labor tirelessly on various tasks. Their efforts are evident as they meticulously lay down framework and pour concrete to bring this colossal foundry to life. Sadly, despite its grandeur and significance within Ford's operations for nearly three decades, the Thames Foundry met its demise when it closed down in 1984. However, through images like these preserved by Historic England Archive photographer A© Johansson (Joh), we can still appreciate and remember this remarkable piece of industrial history from London's past.
