EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the exquisite "Three Muses Putto Cymbals" series, a collection of eight compositions designed by Francesco Primaticcio. The artwork was originally created for the ceiling of Ulysses Gallery in Fontainebleau during the 1560s but tragically destroyed between 1738 and 1739. The image captures the essence of these magnificent designs, featuring three muses accompanied by putti playing cymbals. The intricate engravings, expertly executed by Giorgio Ghisi, an Italian artist from Mantua around 1520-1582, beautifully depict each figure with remarkable detail and finesse. Measuring approximately 11 3/4 x 6 5/8 inches (298 x 168 cm), this trimmed plate engraving is a testament to the timeless beauty of Primaticcio's work. Despite being separated from its original context on the gallery's ceiling, this print preserves the essence and artistic mastery that once adorned one of France's most renowned palaces. Francesco Primaticcio himself hailed from Bologna in Italy (1504-1570) and left an indelible mark on Parisian art during his time at Fontainebleau. This particular piece serves as a poignant reminder of his talent and influence within Renaissance art. As part of Liszt Collection, this print allows us to appreciate and cherish these lost masterpieces while honoring their historical significance.
