This striking portrait depicts Charles Blount, 8th Baron Mountjoy and later created Earl of Devonshire (1562-1606). A prominent English soldier and statesman, Mountjoy rose to prominence under Queen Elizabeth I, serving in various military campaigns against Scotland and Ireland. In 1603, he was created Earl of Devonshire, adding to his existing titles of Baron Mountjoy and Baron Newport. Mountjoy's military career began in earnest during the Northern Rebellion in 1569, where he distinguished himself in the Battle of Hexham. He later served as Lord President of Munster in Ireland, where he successfully quelled rebellions and implemented English rule. His military prowess and political acumen earned him the trust of Queen Elizabeth I, who appointed him Lord Deputy of Ireland in 1597. During his tenure, he worked to suppress the rebellion led by Hugh O'Neill, Earl of Tyrone, and implemented English law and administration in the country. Despite his successes, Mountjoy faced challenges and controversies. His harsh measures in dealing with Irish rebels led to criticisms, and his relationship with Queen Elizabeth I became strained due to disagreements over policy. Nevertheless, Mountjoy remained a significant figure in English history, leaving a lasting impact on both military and political spheres.
