EDITORS COMMENTS
The Albany, London: A Historic Residence for Literary and Dramatic Luminaries Nestled off Piccadilly in the heart of London, The Albany stands as a testament to the city's rich literary and theatrical history. Originally built as Albany House in 1828, this magnificent Georgian mansion was later converted into 69 chambers, primarily intended for bachelors. Among its esteemed residents were three notable figures of the 20th century: Aldous Huxley, Edith Evans, and Graham Greene. Aldous Huxley, the renowned author of dystopian classics like "Brave New World" and "Animal Farm," resided at The Albany from 1937 to 1939. During his time there, he wrote some of his most influential works, including "After Many a Summer Dies the Swan" and "Time Must Have a Stop." Edith Evans, an accomplished actress, graced the stage and screen with her presence for over six decades. She called The Albany her home from 1942 until her death in 1976. Evans' illustrious career included roles in films such as "The Whispering Chorus," "The Ladykillers," and "The Entertainer." Graham Greene, another literary giant, lived at The Albany from 1956 to 1965. Greene, a prolific writer, is best known for his novels "Brighton Rock," "The Power and the Glory," and "Our Man in Havana." His time at The Albany was marked by the completion of several works, including "The Quiet American" and "The End of the Affair." These three influential figures, along with many others, have left their indelible mark on The Albany. Today, the building continues to stand as a symbol of London's artistic heritage, a reminder of the creative minds that once called it home.
