EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking portrait captures the intense gaze and unyielding determination of Alexander Hamilton, an American statesman, soldier, and economist who played a pivotal role in shaping the early history of the United States. Born out of wedlock in Nevis, a British colony in the Caribbean, Hamilton rose against all odds to become a key figure in the American Revolution and one of the founding fathers. He served as George Washington's right-hand man, aide-de-camp, and chief of staff during the war. After the conflict, Hamilton turned his attention to finance and economics, advocating for a strong central government and a national debt to fund infrastructure projects and spur economic growth. Hamilton's most notable achievement was the creation of the United States Treasury Department and the implementation of the Federalist economic program, which included the assumption of state debts, the establishment of a national bank, and the implementation of a tariff to protect American industries. These policies laid the foundation for a stable economy and helped establish the United States as a global economic power. Despite his many accomplishments, Hamilton's tenure was not without controversy. He engaged in a bitter political rivalry with Thomas Jefferson and James Madison, and his duel with Aaron Burr in 1804 ended tragically when Hamilton was fatally wounded. This image, taken from a painting by John Trumbull, serves as a poignant reminder of Hamilton's significant contributions to American history and his enduring legacy as a visionary leader.
