EDITORS COMMENTS
In this striking 1895 portrait, Alva Erskine Smith Vanderbilt Belmont, born Alva Smith on November 23, 1853, poses confidently before the camera with an air of regal sophistication. At the time, Alva was a prominent figure in New York society, known for her beauty, intelligence, and sharp wit. She was also a passionate advocate for women's suffrage, a cause that would come to define her later years. Born into a wealthy and influential family, Alva married Oliver Hazard Perry Belmont in 1875, only to leave him in 1895 for Consul Mortimer R. Schiff. The ensuing scandal made headlines and further cemented her reputation as a bold and unconventional woman. However, it was her work as a suffragist that truly set Alva apart. She became a leading figure in the National American Woman Suffrage Association and used her social connections and wealth to advance the cause. In 1913, she organized the famous "Suffrage Parade" in Washington, D.C., where thousands of women marched to demand the right to vote. Despite facing criticism and opposition, Alva remained undeterred. She continued to champion women's rights and was instrumental in securing the passage of the 19th Amendment, which granted women the right to vote in the United States in 1920. This portrait captures Alva at a pivotal moment in her life, before she fully embraced her role as a suffragist and social reformer. Her piercing gaze and elegant attire convey a sense of determination and resolve, hinting at the powerful force she would become in the women's rights movement.
