This exquisite watercolor painting, featured in Folio 161 of Johann Georg Adam Forster's 'Voyage Round the World' series, captures the intricate details of the Thorn-tailed Rayadito, or Aphrastura spinicauda. Painted during Captain James Cook's second voyage of exploration to the southern continent from 1772 to 1775, this illustration is a testament to the remarkable discoveries made during this era of scientific and geographic discovery. Forster, a naturalist on board the HMS Resolution, meticulously rendered the Rayadito's distinctive features, including its masked face, long, curved bill, and the filament-like feathers on its tail. The bird is depicted perched on a branch, its bright eyes fixed intently on the viewer. This Passerine, belonging to the Furnariidae family, was likely observed during the expedition's travels through South America.
