EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the poignant moment of the Arrival of the Unknown Warrior at Dover Marine Railway Station on 10 November, 1920. The Unknown Warrior, an unidentified British soldier killed during the First World War, was brought to Dover from France for a state funeral in Westminster Abbey, London. The soldier's coffin, draped in the Union Flag, is carried off the train by six soldiers in full uniform, their faces etched with solemnity and respect. A large crowd of mourners, many with tears in their eyes, gather at the station platform to pay their respects. The scene is set against the backdrop of the Western Docks, with the English Channel and the white cliffs of Dover visible in the distance. The arrival of the Unknown Warrior marked the end of the First World War and the beginning of the 1920s, a decade that would be forever marked by loss, reflection, and the search for meaning in the aftermath of the Great War. This powerful image serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by the brave men and women who fought in the war and the enduring impact it had on the nation.
