EDITORS COMMENTS
Baron Du Pont Duchambon, Eleve du Roi et de l'Ecole Royale Militaire de Paris (Baron Du Pont Duchambon, Royal Pupil and Student of the Military School of Paris, the Day He Tried to Board Blanchard's Balloon at the Champs de Mars, 1784) This half-length portrait depicts Baron Du Pont Duchambon, a French military officer and aviation pioneer, who dreamed of taking flight. The image, dated between 1790 and 1850, captures the baron in the prime of his life, dressed in the uniform of the Military School of Paris. The backdrop of the photograph is a striking representation of a hot air balloon, reminiscent of the famous Montgolfier brothers' invention, which had captivated the world just a few decades prior. The intriguing story behind this portrait is that of Baron Du Pont Duchambon's audacious attempt to board the balloon of Jean-Pierre Blanchard during a public demonstration at the Champs de Mars in Paris in 1784. Blanchard, an accomplished aeronaut, had become a sensation in Europe for his daring flights. Inspired by the pioneering spirit of the age, Baron Du Pont Duchambon, with a mixture of ambition and audacity, decided to seize the opportunity to join Blanchard in the sky. As the balloon ascended, Baron Du Pont Duchambon, in an attempt to board, jumped onto the wicker basket, but the balloon's ascent proved too powerful, and he was left dangling precariously beneath it. The incident, which was widely reported in the press, became a symbol of human endeavor and the allure of flight. This portrait, with the balloon as a backdrop, serves as a poignant reminder of Baron Du Pont Duchambon's daring ambition and the spirit of innovation that characterized the late 18th century.
