EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcolored copperplate engraving, taken from Friedrich Bertuch's Bilderbuch fur Kinder (Picture Book for Children), published in Weimar in 1798, showcases a delightful array of six distinct breeds of dogs. The first breed represented is the Dachshund, a short-legged hound breed originating in Germany, known for its tenacious hunting skills and distinctive elongated body. Next to the Dachshund stands the Braque Pointer, a versatile hunting dog breed from France, recognized by its distinctive orange and white coat and its exceptional ability to both point and retrieve game. The Anatolian Shepherd Dog, a large and powerful breed from Turkey, is depicted in the third position. This ancient breed was originally used as a livestock guardian, protecting flocks from predators. Fourth in line is the Doguin of Bordeaux, a French breed that was originally used for hunting wild boar. Its powerful build and short, smooth coat make it an effective and formidable hunting companion. The Maltese Dog, a small, white, and elegant breed, is the fifth breed featured in this illustration. Originating from the Mediterranean island of Malta, this breed was once popular among the European aristocracy for its companionship and hypoallergenic coat. Lastly, the Lion Dog or Chow Chow, a unique breed from China, is depicted in the sixth position. This ancient breed is known for its distinctive blue-black tongue, lion-like appearance, and thick, dense coat. Despite its intimidating appearance, the Chow Chow is a loyal and affectionate companion. This image offers a glimpse into the rich history of canine breeds, showcasing the diversity and unique characteristics that have made dogs such beloved companions for centuries.
