Darwin's groundbreaking expedition aboard HMS Beagle, which took place between 1831 and 1836, brought him into contact with a myriad of new species, including this intriguing fox. Canis Antarcticus, also known as Dusicyon Antarcticus, Dusicyon australis, or the Falkland Fox, is a carnivorous mammal belonging to the family Canidae, order Carnivora, and suborder Caniformia. This illustration, created during Darwin's time, is an essential record of the Antarctic Fox, which displays its distinctive features, such as its bushy tail, thick fur, and pointed ears. The Antarctic Fox is the only native terrestrial mammal species in the Falkland Islands, and it is well adapted to the harsh sub-Antarctic climate, with the ability to survive in extreme temperatures and scarce food resources.
