EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning botanical illustration, titled "Pompelmouse chadec" or Bitter Orange, depicts the exquisite Citrus paradisi, commonly known as the grapefruit. The illustration is taken from "Histoire naturelle des Orangers," a comprehensive work on citrus plants published between 1818 and 1820 by the renowned naturalist Antoine Risso. The illustration is held in the esteemed Botany Library at the Natural History Museum in London. The illustration showcases the grapefruit tree's lush, green foliage, with its large, vibrant flowers in full bloom. The flowers are characterized by their five petals, which are arranged in a symmetrical pattern, and their distinctive yellow stamens. The grapefruit itself is depicted in cross-section, revealing its juicy, segmented pulp encased in a thick, bitter rind. As a member of the Rutaceae family, and more specifically the Citraceae subfamily, the grapefruit is an angiosperm, a type of flowering plant that produces seeds enclosed in an ovary. It is also a eudicot, a subgroup of dicots, which are flowering plants with two embryonic seed leaves. The grapefruit is further classified as an Eurosid, a large clade of dicots, and a Malvidae, a large order of flowering plants. The grapefruit is a valuable source of nutrition, providing a rich supply of vitamin C and dietary fiber. Its bitter taste is due to the presence of compounds such as naringenin and limonin, which give it a unique flavor and health benefits. This illustration provides a fascinating glimpse into the natural history of this important and delicious fruit, offering a window into the botanical world of the nineteenth century.
