EDITORS COMMENTS
This image showcases the whimsical and enchanting world of The Co-Optimists, a pierrotic entertainment revue that graced the stages of London's Royalty Theatre on June 27, 1921, before transferring to the larger Palace Theatre. The Co-Optimists, which went through six editions between 1922 and 1927, were considered the successors to the popular Follies. The pierrot-inspired production was known for its frilly collars, flamboyant costumes, and light-hearted humor. The central figure in this evocative photograph is a pierrot clown, his face painted in traditional white with a red nose and expressive black lines. He dons a frilled collar, a skullcap adorned with a jaunty feather, and holds a plump, red balloon in each hand. The clown's fat, round belly and the exaggerated curves of his body add to the playful and carefree atmosphere of the production. The artist, Hugh Willoughby, masterfully captures the essence of the Co-Optimists' revue with this striking image, transporting us back to the 1920s and the magical world of London's cabaret scene.
