EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking portrait captures the intense gaze and unyielding determination of Antoine Charles Louis Collinet, Comte de Lasalle, a prominent French military figure during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Born on October 15, 1775, in Chalon-sur-Saône, France, Lasalle joined the military at a young age and quickly rose through the ranks, becoming a colonel by the age of 32. During the French Revolutionary Wars, Lasalle distinguished himself in numerous battles, including the Battle of Jemappes in 1792 and the Battle of Würzburg in 1796. He was later appointed as the governor of the French colony of Saint-Domingue (present-day Haiti) in 1801, but was forced to flee after the slave rebellion led by Toussaint L'Ouverture. Lasalle returned to Europe and continued his military career, serving under Napoleon Bonaparte during the Wars of the Third Coalition. He was killed in action at the Battle of Wagram on July 6, 1809, at the age of 33. This portrait, taken around the time of Lasalle's appointment as governor of Saint-Domingue, showcases his military prowess and charisma. Dressed in the uniform of a French general, Lasalle gazes intently out of the frame, his expression conveying a sense of focus and resolve. The intricate detailing of his uniform, from the gold braid on his coat to the polished boots, underscores his high rank and status. Lasalle's legacy as a military leader and colonial administrator continues to be studied by historians, particularly in the context of the French Revolutionary Wars and the Haitian Revolution. This portrait is a testament to his enduring impact on French military history and the broader historical context of the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
