EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking image captures the grandeur and pageantry of the Coronation Procession of King Edward VI, which took place on February 20, 1547. At just ten years old, Edward was the youngest monarch in English history to ascend the throne following the death of his father, King Henry VIII. The procession began at the Tower of London, where Edward was proclaimed king, and made its way to Westminster Abbey for the coronation ceremony. The streets were richly decorated for the occasion, with tapestries, banners, and heraldic devices adorning the buildings. The air was filled with the sounds of trumpets, drums, and the voices of the crowds lining the route. The procession itself was a spectacle to behold, with a vast array of participants including nobles, knights, and various guilds and livery companies. The young king rode in a richly decorated carriage, surrounded by his councilors and attendants. His sister, Lady Jane Grey, who would later be queen for just nine days, rode alongside him. The procession paused at various points along the route for prayers and ceremonies, including the crossing of London Bridge, where the king was symbolically purified in a ceremony dating back to medieval times. The Coronation Ceremony itself was shortened due to Edward's young age, with the Archbishop of Canterbury placing the crown on the king's head and anointing him with holy oil. The event marked the formal beginning of Edward's reign, which would see significant political and religious changes in Tudor England.
