EDITORS COMMENTS
This haunting image captures the aftermath of the Battle of Tutrakan during the First World War, which took place on the eastern European border between Romania and Bulgaria in September 1916. The fortified town of Tutrakan, now part of Bulgaria, is depicted in ruins, having been captured by the advancing Bulgarian forces. The once imposing fortifications, designed to protect against invading forces, now lie in shambles, with guns and weapons scattered about. The damage inflicted during the intense battle is evident in the crumbling walls and shattered buildings. The Great War, which began in 1914, had reached this remote corner of Europe, causing destruction and devastation in its wake. The Battle of Tutrakan marked a significant victory for the Bulgarians, but came at a great cost to both sides. This poignant photograph serves as a reminder of the brutal realities of war and the enduring impact it has on people and places.
