EDITORS COMMENTS
In this elegant portrait, Constance Edwina Cornwallis-West, Duchess of Westminster (1876-1970), is depicted in the prime of her youth and beauty. Born into the aristocracy as the elder sister of Daisy, Princess of Pless, Constance was the first wife of the 2nd Duke of Westminster, one of the wealthiest men in England at the time. The photograph was taken in 1904, several years before she would marry the Duke in 1907. The Duchess is seen wearing an exquisite Edwardian gown, adorned with intricate beadwork and lace. Her hair is styled in an elaborate updo, with a delicate veil covering her chestnut locks. She gazes directly at the camera with a confident and poised expression, exuding an air of refinement and grace. Despite her privileged upbringing, Constance demonstrated a remarkable sense of compassion and philanthropy. During the First World War, she set up a hospital in Le Touquet, France, to care for wounded soldiers. Her selfless act of kindness not only saved countless lives but also earned her the admiration of her community and the gratitude of the soldiers she helped. The Duchess of Westminster's life was marked by both opulence and humanitarianism. Her portrait serves as a reminder of the complexities and contradictions of the aristocracy during the Edwardian era, a time when wealth and privilege coexisted with compassion and generosity. This evocative image captures the essence of a remarkable woman who left an indelible mark on history.
