Born on September 7, 1533, Elizabeth was the daughter of King Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn, and became queen following her half-sister Mary I's death in 1558. Her reign, which lasted until her own death in 1603, marked a period of relative peace and prosperity for England and Ireland. Elizabeth's reputation as the Virgin Queen stemmed from her never marrying and remaining devoted to her kingdom throughout her reign.
