EDITORS COMMENTS
This vibrant postcard captures the grandeur of the Finsbury Park Empire in the early 1910s, a stunning theatre that once stood proudly in London's Finsbury Park. Designed by the renowned architect Frank Matcham for Oswald Stoll in 1910, the theatre was a testament to the Arts and Crafts movement, with its intricate details and rich colors. Matcham, known for his innovative designs, incorporated elements of the Arts and Crafts style in just a few of his works, making the Finsbury Park Empire a rare gem. The theatre's facade, as depicted in this postcard, was adorned with ornate decorations, including intricate carvings, colorful tiles, and elaborate moldings. The arched windows and tall columns added to the theatre's imposing presence, while the marquee showcased the latest productions in bold, eye-catching letters. Unfortunately, the Finsbury Park Empire did not survive the test of time. It was demolished in 1965, leaving behind only memories and photographs like this one. Today, the site where the theatre once stood is a car park, a reminder of the rich history and cultural significance that once thrived there. This postcard offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back to a time when the Finsbury Park Empire was a beacon of entertainment and architectural beauty in London.
