EDITORS COMMENTS
Gabriel Cornelius Ritter von Max (11 August 1840 – 2 February 1915) was an Austrian painter, born in Prague, who is best known for his portrait of Frederica Hauffe, also referred to as The Seeress of Prevorst. Painted in 1892, this oil on canvas masterpiece is now a part of the National Gallery in Prague, Czech Republic. Max's portrait of Hauffe, who was born in Germany in 1825, captures the enigmatic and otherworldly qualities that made her a subject of fascination during the late 19th century. Hauffe was known for her alleged psychic abilities and was a popular figure in European society, attracting the attention of artists, writers, and intellectuals. Max's portrait of Hauffe is a prime example of realism in 19th-century art. The artist masterfully depicts the subject's aged and worn appearance, with her wrinkled face, sunken eyes, and disheveled hair. The bedsheets and pillows in the background are rumpled and disarrayed, adding to the sense of dishevelment and otherworldliness. Despite her aged appearance, Hauffe's gaze is intense and focused, as if she is gazing into the depths of one's soul. Max's use of light and shadow adds to the painting's dramatic effect, with the light illuminating Hauffe's face and casting deep shadows on the bed and walls behind her. Max's portrait of The Seeress of Prevorst is a fascinating glimpse into the world of the late 19th century and the fascination with the supernatural and the unknown. It is a testament to Max's skill as a painter and his ability to capture the essence of his subject, making it a must-see for anyone interested in the history of art and the mysteries of the human psyche.
