Born on February 9, 1847, in Nicosia, Italy, Ferraris displayed a remarkable aptitude for mathematics and physics from a young age. He studied at the University of Genoa and later at the Polytechnic Institute of Turin, where he conducted research on electrical phenomena. In 1885, Ferraris made history by independently discovering the rotating magnetic field, a fundamental concept in the design of electric motors and generators. His invention, which predated Nikola Tesla's work on alternating current motors by several years, was a significant milestone in the electrification of industry and transportation. The photograph, taken during Ferraris' later years, reveals a man with a thoughtful expression, deep-set eyes, and a furrowed brow, reflecting the intensity of his scientific pursuits. His hands, which bear the marks of a life spent in laboratories and workshops, are folded in front of him, as if in contemplation of the many discoveries yet to be made.
