EDITORS COMMENTS
This lithograph, Plate 69 from Heinrich Rudolf Schinz's "Naturgeschichte und Abbildungen der Vogel-Gattungen" (Natural History and Illustrations of the Bird Families), published between 1831 and 1833, showcases two distinct species of junglefowl: Gallus sonneratii, the grey junglefowl, and Gallus gallus bankiva, the red junglefowl. The grey junglefowl is depicted on the left, its blue-grey plumage contrasting sharply with its red eyes and wattles. Its comb, a characteristic feature of the gallus family, is brown and relatively small. In the background, a blue fish, possibly a dogfish shark (Chondrichthyes, Elasmobranchii), is shown, adding an intriguing touch to the scene. On the right, the red junglefowl is portrayed in all its vibrant glory. Its plumage is a rich, reddish-brown, and its comb is a bold, fiery red. The bird's face is adorned with a distinctive blue facial mask, and its wattles are a bright red. Both species are native to Asia and are part of the larger chicken family (Gallus gallus), which includes the domestic chicken. The lithograph was produced by the skilled hand of Karl Ides Brodtmann, a renowned German natural history illustrator of the 19th century. The image is a testament to the meticulous attention to detail and the artistic mastery of the time. The junglefowl are depicted with anatomical accuracy, and the inclusion of the dogfish shark adds an interesting connection between the avian and aquatic worlds. This beautiful print is a valuable addition to any collection of natural history or ornithology, showcasing the intricacies of the natural world and the artistic prowess of the past. The eudicot Fabaceae angiosperm in the background, a common component of the jungle environment, adds to the overall richness and authenticity of the image.
