In this poignant and historic photograph, General Robert E. Lee pays his final respects to his former adversary, General Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson, at his grave site in Lexington, Virginia, in 1872. The two great military commanders had fought against each other during the American Civil War, with Lee leading the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia and Jackson commanding the Confederate Army of the Valley. Their famed clashes, including the First Battle of Bull Run and the Battle of Chancellorsville, had shaped the course of the war and left an indelible mark on military history. Despite their shared military prowess and mutual respect, Lee and Jackson had been on opposing sides during the conflict. However, following Jackson's tragic death by friendly fire at the Battle of Chancellorsville in May 1863, Lee expressed his deep sorrow and admiration for his fallen foe. In the years following the war, their relationship was further cemented when Lee served as the president of Washington College (now Washington and Lee University) in Lexington, where Jackson had once taught before the war.
