EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking portrait captures the distinguished visage of Henry de Worms, 1st Baron Pirbright (1840-1903), a prominent British statesman of the late Victorian era. Henry Worms was born into a Jewish family in London and rose to prominence through his political acumen and dedication to public service. He was educated at University College London and called to the bar in 1865. Worms entered politics as a Liberal Member of Parliament (MP) for Southampton in 1880, serving in various government positions under Prime Ministers Gladstone and Rosebery. In 1892, he was elevated to the peerage as Baron Pirbright, of Pirbright in the County of Surrey. During his political career, Pirbright was a strong advocate for Jewish rights and played a key role in the Aliens Act of 1905, which aimed to limit immigration into the UK. He also served as Postmaster General and President of the Board of Trade, where he oversaw significant reforms in the postal and telecommunications sectors. Despite his political achievements, Pirbright's personal life was marked by tragedy. His wife, whom he married in 1868, died by suicide in 1882, leaving him to raise their five children alone. Pirbright remained dedicated to his public duties, however, and continued to serve in government until his retirement in 1903. This photograph, taken in the late 19th century, captures Pirbright in the prime of his political career, with an air of authority and intelligence that reflects his impressive accomplishments in British politics. The image serves as a reminder of Pirbright's significant contributions to the political landscape of his time and his enduring legacy as a statesman and advocate for Jewish rights.
