EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Introducing an intriguing assemblage of historical brass and woodwind musical instruments: hunting horns (1 & 2), serpent (3), French horn (4), bugle (5), and a sacbut or trombone (6). This image, a copperplate engraving by John Lee after a drawing by T. Webster, is taken from Abraham Rees' Cyclopedia or Universal Dictionary of Arts, Sciences and Literature, published by Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme and Brown in London during 1820. 2. The hunting scene depicted in the background sets the stage for an exploration of these antique musical instruments, each with its unique characteristics and historical significance. The hunting horns, with their distinctive conical bore and flared bell, were used as signaling devices in the hunt, their loud and penetrating sound carrying over great distances. 3. The serpent, a precursor to the modern-day tuba, is a versatile instrument with a coiled, serpentine shape. It was played by placing the mouthpiece in the mouth and blowing into the bell while sliding the instrument along the body to change pitches. 4. The French horn, with its distinctive conical shape and bell flare, is a versatile brass instrument known for its rich, mellow sound. It was developed in the late 17th or early 18th century as an improvement upon the hunting horn. 5. The bugle, a compact, conical-bore brass instrument, was used for signaling in military and hunting contexts. Its distinctive, loud, and clear sound could be heard over long distances, making it an essential tool for coordinating troops or hunters. 6. The sacbut or trombone, with its distinctive S-shaped bell, is a brass instrument with a rich, mellow sound. It was widely used in the Renaissance and Baroque periods for both secular and sacred music. The image showcases the intricate craftsmanship and attention to detail that characterized these historical musical instruments, offering a fascinating glimpse into the past.
